In the Mid-Michigan area, Norm Higgins has been growing chestnut trees for 40 years. He has developed a mixed fertilizer that he has made special for his trees. He took this recipe down to his local elevator and they mix this for him. He has to promise to buy a ton of the material each year. You will notice in the recipe below (handed out at the 2000 Annual Meeting) that he has added micronutrients. These are nutrients that are required for optimum growth of plants. He has taken soil samples from his farm and recognizes that certain elements are missing or in low supply. Do you need these micronutrients? Only soil and leaf tissue tests can answer that.
